The 5 Business Engines

There are five key engines in every dental practice that drive success. At mid-year, evaluate each one to ensure it’s still moving you toward your vision:

• Systems and Organization
• Sales and Marketing
• People
• Finance
• Clinical and Technology

Most practices won’t have all five engines firing perfectly — but reviewing each area creates opportunity for growth.

Rate each engine on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = poor, 10 = outstanding). Then ask: What actions could improve this area by one to three points before year-end?

Here’s a quick refresher to guide your review:

• Organization: Are your systems running efficiently? Who is accountable for each key process?
• Marketing: Is your brand clear? How are you creating a “wow” patient experience? How is your online presence performing?
• People: Do you have the right team in place? Are they trained, engaged, and motivated?
• Finance: Are your fees current? How effective are your collection policies? Are you monitoring AR and insurance claims?
• Clinical/Technology: Are you offering the right services? Is your technology up to date? Are there new services or equipment to consider?
